Discectomy

What is a discectomy?

A discectomy is the removal of all or part of a disc. This can be done in two different ways. Open discectomy is usually performed while you’re under general anesthetic. In some cases the surgeon may have to remove some bone and ligaments in order to get access to the damaged disc without hurting the surrounding nerve tissue. This is called a laminectomy or laminotomy depending on how much bone is removed. The surgeon will then remove the part of the disc that is protruding and any other disc fragments than may have escaped. Nothing is used to replace the disc that is removed.

Another alternative – not suited to all patients – is endoscopic discectomy. Surgeons following this technique use an endoscope (a small camera/microscope that can be inserted inside the body). This allows them to make a smaller incision, leading to a faster recovery.
